The Turntable
The decision to install a turntable was prompted by Chris Hurley putting one onto his 'n' guage layout (featured elsewhere in this web site). It seemed obvious that our motive power depot should include the provision for turning locos, and provide a nice scenic feature. The 'Peco' kit seemed the best bet and proved fairly easy to construct. A motor drive system was sourced on the internet and has proved very effective. Realistic operating speeds were acheivable with a little gear selection. There is also a clever system in the turntable that reverses the power when it turns so that the loco always goes in the direction you would expect. A bonus we were not expecting. A little cosmetic work has been done but when confidence increases there may be some more. Fitting was relatively easy following the maker's instructions and template - BUT - this is a critical stage if smooth operation is to be acheived. We have included storage siding off the table as well as the means to turn locos.
This has added considerable interest to the layout both visually and operationally. We hope the pictures convey a little of this.
